The R75, 750cc had been BMW’s largest capacity and poster child motorcycle since its launch in 1970 and the four-stroke boxer twin was finally giving the brand a road bike with genuine sporting credentials to go with their famous build quality. The new ‘/6’ incarnation of the model came out in 1974 and was a big performance improvement on its predecessor as it now had a disc brake up front replacing the old drums and a 5-speed gearbox to replace the old 4-gear unit. Other styling alterations were made to the instruments whilst the speedo and rev counter now had their own binnacle rather than being embedded in the headlamp. The side panels and exhaust were updated to give a more aggressive look and the kick start pedal was removed.
With a power output of 50hp and the new 5-speed box to help it, the R75/6 had a sporty feel although with the shaft drive, large tank and substantial build quality the bike is no lightweight but it does make a fantastic classic that’s perfect for long trip and rallies.
This 1977 BMW R75/6 now offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub is an original UK market bike and has covered just 7,000 miles from new. It’s time-warp condition is testament to the high level of care it has clearly seen throughout its life and we don’t think you will find a better example. The original owner kept this wonderful R75 until 2003 so he clearly liked it, especially as the bike remains in excellent condition.
It is also immediately apparent that the original owner had every conceivable extra put on the bike. On the dash it has the usual speedo and rev dial but to this has been added a voltmeter and a clock, we are not sure these are original but they are so well done that they certainly look factory fitted. Period Krauser panniers plus inner bags and frames are on the bike as are crash bars and all are in excellent condition like the rest of the bike.
Not fitted to this BMW R75/6 but included in the sale are colour-matched leg guards, spot lights, a tank cover and a screen. I am not sure what else you could have added to the bike even if you wanted to!
The bike has been well maintained and the history file shows a good level of servicing and there are MOTs for almost every year going back to 1980 back up its very low mileage. The bike is accompanied by a re-printed owners manual, a Haynes workshop manual and a spare set of keys.
Needless to say this stunning, very low mileage BMW R75/6 is in ready to go condition, and ready to give the next lucky owner another 50 years of excellent service.
