MODEL HISTORY

Rolls-Royce brought out a smaller model, the 20HP that they built alongside their flagship 40/50HP Silver Ghost in 1922. The 20HP was aimed at owner / drivers rather than customers looking to be chauffeur driven although many 20HP cars were coached in more formal bodies. A new in-line, 3.1 litre, 6 cylinder engine featuring overhead valves was designed for the car, initially driven through a 3-speed gearbox with a central gear change but upgraded in 1925 to a 4-speed until with the gear lever on the more traditional right hand side of the car. The substantial chassis had rigid front and rear axels suspended by semi-elliptic springs with rear brakes only although this was changed to 4 wheel braking with servo assistance from 1925.

Henry Royce said of the car:

‘Simplicity was one of the aims of the designers, but not at the expense of perfection.’

This mantra was evident throughout these sturdy cars and they sold well through their production run ending in 1929 and they carried numerous bodies on them including saloons, tourers, 3 position dropheads and landaulets from various top coachmakers.

THIS MOTOR CAR

The 1926 Rolls-Royce 20hp now offered for sale at The Classic Motor Hub started life as a 3-position drophead and after the war was lovingly restored to a saloon bodied car and used extensively by its owner for touring.

In the 1980s the pickup body was put on since and since then it has been very well looked after and in the current owners hands the car has been well serviced by Rolls-Royce specialists AJ Glew. The car was serviced in both 2016 and 2019 by AJ Glew at which time the oil and fluids were changed, the engine has been set up correctly, the front axel king-pins were done, the brakes were gone through and the rear leaf springs were uprated to cope with the demands of a pickup body.

The car has been currently used as a promotional vehicle for the owner’s orchard company and it looks wonderful finished in dark green with black wings and running boards and wheels. The interior is finished in dark brown leather with brown carpets, whilst the leather seats are worn but give the car a wonderfully original feel.

This Rolls-Royce 20hp starts easily, drives well and the brakes are in good order having recently been attended to. This would make a perfect promotional car for a business (as it is currently being used) or as a fun and quirky car for those that like something a little different!
