SOLD – 1963 VW SPLIT SCREEN CAMPER VAN

  • The original Type 2 (T1B) split screen camper
  • Dry Texas climate for 50 years
  • Rebuilt and restored by Brookside Aircooled VW Specialists
  • Interior Restored by VanWurks
  • Modern upgrades and a full alarm system

Supplied new in 1963 to San Ontonio, Texas, where it remained for over 50 years, this Volkswagen Split Screen Camper is a stunning example. It was originally supplied as a Type 2 (T1B) Micro-Bus (confirmed by the VW Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen) and left the factory in the colour scheme it bears today.

Kept in Texas for most of its life, it was found in a good but tired condition, and was imported to the UK, whereupon a detailed restoration was commissioned. The advantages of the Texan climate were apparent, when upon peeling back layers of paint, the body was found in excellent condition throughout. The sills required repair, and the bus was painted back to Sealing Wax Red (L53), with a Beige Grey (L472) roof. The 1600cc engine was stripped and rebuilt, and new replacement parts were fitted including a new fuel tank, bearings, bushes, window and door seals. The work was entrusted to the well-respected Brookside Aircooled VW Specialists, supported by invoices totalling nearly £16,000.

More recently, this Split Screen Camper was sent to interior specialist VanWurks in Manchester. A complete new two-tone interior in cream and mushroom was installed to the highest standard, as it still remains. Whilst remaining in-keeping with the basic style of the original layout, modern materials were utilised to provide more useable functionality. The specification includes a built-in fridge, two-ring hob, sink, “Rock & Roll” fold out bed, picnic table (which stores in the roof), up-rated Blaupunkt stereo system and a full alarm system. A complete new roof lining was correctly installed, with sound insulation and additional lighting. A modern power-management system provides leisure battery or – if required – external hook-up power to all appliances and on-board systems. This power management system also acts as a battery conditioner for vehicle and leisure battery while in storage and provides 240V outlets in the vehicles for use with other devices. The additional work completed by VanWurks cost approximately £8,000.

This eye-catching Split Screen Camper remains in excellent condition throughout, and combines the best of modern reliability with fantastic period looks, whilst providing a wonderful combination of comfort and up-to-date technology. It’s the perfect companion for touring holidays, trips to the coast, festivals or weekends away with a loved one!
