In 1985, the Williams team came across a slight issue: Drivers Keke Rosberg and Nigel Mansell had helmet designs that were hard to differentiate front-on, and from a distance it was hard to read the number on the car. Team members and spectators were also struggling, so to differentiate the two, Williams decided upon a simple solution – they’d paint Mansell’s number in a different colour.
‘Red 5’ was born – and whether Mansell was carrying the number in Formula 1 or IndyCar, it became a symbol of passion, aggression, and Mansell’s trademark never-give-up attitude.
This homage to Red 5 by Omologato is handmade by craftsmen who’ve been assembling watches for over 30 years using ultra reliable Japanese Meca-Quartz movements. Not only do they not need maintenance but are highly accurate.
