VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Few post-war British grand tourers have left as lasting an impression as the Aston Martin DB4. Introduced in 1958, it marked a defining moment for the Newport Pagnell marque, pairing Touring of Milan’s elegant Superleggera coachwork with Tadek Marek’s advanced twin-cam straight-six engine to create one of the era’s most accomplished high-performance GT cars. By the arrival of the DB4 Series III, Aston Martin had refined the model through a programme of continual development, producing what many enthusiasts consider to be one of the most rewarding and usable iterations of this iconic grand tourer.

Completed in 1962, this matching-numbers DB4 Series III was delivered new to California in left-hand-drive form, originally finished in Goodwood Green with a beige leather interior. As one of just 60 left-hand-drive DB4 Series III examples produced, it ranks among the rarest and most sought-after variants of the model. Factory build records also confirm the car’s desirable Laycock overdrive transmission and distinctive single driver’s door mirror, both specified from new.

Repatriated to the United Kingdom from California in 1997, the car has since benefitted from a carefully considered programme of restoration and mechanical enhancement, undertaken with the aim of improving usability while preserving the character that defines the DB4. Its original matching engine was comprehensively rebuilt to 4.2-litre specification, while further improvements included upgraded front suspension and brakes, power-assisted steering, an oil cooler and a Kenlowe cooling fan. During the same restoration, the body was stripped to bare metal before being refinished in its elegant present colour scheme of Ice Blue, complemented by a beautifully trimmed red leather interior.

Most recently, the DB4 has benefited from a major service carried out by renowned Aston Martin specialists Goldsmith & Young, ensuring it is presented in excellent mechanical order and ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian. Combining matching-numbers originality, rare left-hand-drive DB4 Series III production, desirable California provenance and thoughtfully executed mechanical upgrades, this is an exceptionally well-sorted example of one of Aston Martin’s defining post-war models. Beautifully restored, superbly maintained and eminently usable, it offers the next owner the opportunity to experience one of Britain’s greatest grand tourers exactly as it was intended—on the open road. In fact, we proved these statements and its reliability when it was consigned for sale at The Hub by driving it from Monaco to our Hangar showroom.
