The Story
The 722 Mille Miglia, also known as the Mille Miglia 722, refers to a historic endurance race that took place in Italy. The term “722” holds special significance and is derived from the race’s most famous victory.
The Mille Miglia itself was a long-distance road race held from 1927 to 1957, covering a 1,000-mile (approximately 1,600 kilometers) loop that started and ended in Brescia, Italy. The route passed through various Italian cities and towns, including Rome, Florence, and Bologna, showcasing the country’s beautiful landscapes.
The 722 Mille Miglia specifically refers to the victory achieved by the British racing driver, Sir Stirling Moss, and his co-driver, Denis Jenkinson, in the 1955 edition of the race. The number “722” represents the starting time of their car, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, which was 7:22 a.m. on May 1, 1955.
Moss and Jenkinson’s triumph in the 1955 Mille Miglia is considered one of the most remarkable and legendary performances in motorsport history. They completed the grueling 1,000-mile distance in a record-breaking time of 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds, averaging an incredible speed of 98.53 mph (158.86 km/h). Their achievement showcased the skill, endurance, and technical prowess required in long-distance racing.
The victory of Moss and Jenkinson in the 722 Mille Miglia cemented their place in racing folklore, and it remains one of the most celebrated moments in the history of motorsports. The 722 number has since become synonymous with the Mille Miglia and is often used to refer to the race, particularly in the context of commemorating Moss and Jenkinson’s exceptional achievement.
