VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Among the most distinctive British military vehicles of the post-war period, the Daimler Ferret occupies a special position. Compact, exceptionally capable and immediately recognisable, it was developed as a fast armoured reconnaissance vehicle for the British Army, combining remarkable cross-country ability with the rugged engineering demanded of a front-line military machine. This 1963 example, chassis 01 EA 33, represents the Ferret at the height of its Cold War service.

Designed primarily for reconnaissance and liaison duties, the Ferret’s relatively small proportions belie its considerable capability. Its armoured construction was paired with four-wheel drive and a highly manoeuvrable chassis, allowing it to operate confidently across difficult terrain while retaining the speed and agility essential to its intended role.

Power comes from the Rolls-Royce B60 six-cylinder petrol engine, coupled to the Ferret’s characteristic pre-selector gearbox and four-wheel-drive system. It is a wonderfully purposeful mechanical specification, engineered around durability, mobility and reliability in demanding military conditions, and one which gives the Ferret much of its unmistakable character.

More than six decades after it was built, the Daimler Ferret has become one of the most recognisable and collectible British armoured vehicles of its generation.
